Two years before his death Herbeck gave over 1,000 of his handwritten sheets to the Austrian national library as donation. From 1960 until Herbeck's death in 1991, Navratil prompted Herbeck to write some 1,200 poems, always providing the poet with a theme, which often, though not always, became the poem's title. Herbeck’s poetry won the appreciation of other writers, such as Winfried Georg Sebald, Ernst Jandl and Elfriede Jelinek. Some texts were set to music by Wolf Biermann (März-Lieder), Michael Hirsch (Das stille Zimmer) or Wolfgang Rihm (Alexanderlieder). The titles of many of his poems are the names of animals that were offered to him by his psychiatrist Leo Navratil as exercises.
